Sports commentators love to refer to people as generics. Not even people, but places too. For example, you might hear "The Kobe Bryants, Kevin Garnetts, and Lebron Jameses of the world" to refer to successful straight-from-high-school to the NBA players, or "the Ohio States and the Floridas of the world" (notice the "of the world") rather than say "players like Kobe or Kevin or Lebron" or "college programs like Ohio State and Florida".
I dunno, it just peeves me to hear it.
